Knecht Ruprecht is a Fae companion-figure of winter households—part servant, part moral arbiter—often sighted at thresholds during St. Nicholas' rounds. Smell: a coal-smoke tang and damp wool, with the faint sourness of old leather. Sound: the rasp of a low voice, the creak of hobnailed boots, and the hollow rattle of a sack or bundles of birch. Temperature: he carries the crisp, winter chill of an unheated yard; his presence seems to steal a degree from the air, leaving breath like tiny white ghosts.
