Nachtalb Lore & Origins

Nachtalb is a Hostile Spirit — a nocturnal 'Alp' that visits sleepers with the weight of a dream. In the field it is rarely 'seen' as a solid form; observers report a low, ink-dark outline at the edge of vision or a brief silhouette like a small horse or crouched child that slips away when looked at directly. Smell: a sharp, metallic tang — like cold iron left out in rain — undercut with the must of old straw and linen. Sound: a slow, rasping breath close to the ear, punctuated by faint, hoof-like taps that do not match any footfall in the room; some witnesses note a soft, repetitive whisper as if a lullaby carried through wet wool. Temperature: a sudden, localized chill that numbs the collar and chest, leaving skin damp with cold sweat and sometimes a thin ring of condensation on the pillow where the pressure rested. Note: the Nachtalb's presence is most pronounced between the second and fourth hour after midnight, in closed, poorly ventilated rooms where hearths are cold.

Nachtalb Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • A sleeper awakened with the sensation of weight on the chest, breath felt on the face though the air is still, and a ring of cold damp on the bedding where nothing should have pressed.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Avoid sleeping flat on the back when alone in an unlit room; keep a small iron object (nail, horseshoe, or coin) at the head of the bed and a light burning near the sleeper until dawn. Improve ventilation and do not allow heavy, damp textiles to lie against the face.
  • defense: Wake the victim fully — sudden conscious breath breaks the hold. Place iron at the pillow and across thresholds, clap or ring a small bell to scatter the presence, or expose the room to sunrise. If forced to remain, rolling the sleeper onto their side often relieves pressure until they can be roused.
  • offering: A simple iron trinket left on the windowsill or a bowl of cold water placed by the bed is said to distract or appease a visiting Nachtalb long enough for the household to wake.

Nachtalb Abilities & Powers

  • Alpdruck (Night-press)
Sits upon a sleeper's chest, inducing sleep paralysis and crushing breath while forcing vivid, terror-filled nightmares.
  • Dream-Riding
Invades and reshapes a victim's dreams to feed on fear and prolong its influence into waking hours.
  • Nocturnal Whisper
Leaves persistent, sibilant murmurs that erode resolve and can trigger prolonged insomnia or melancholy.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Nachtalb

  • Wrought Iron
Contact with iron (nails, blades, horseshoes) severs its connection to sleepers and drives it away.
  • Sunlight / Dawn
Daylight disperses it; it cannot remain manifest in full daylight and loses most power at dawn.
  • Rousing the Sleeper
Vigorous waking—shaking, slapping, loud clapping or singing—usually breaks its grip and banishes it.
