Patupaiarehe

Patupaiarehe is a Fae of the misted ridgelines and deep bush of Māori tradition: pale, often fair-haired folk who move like smoke between fern and native pines. In field terms they present as an elusive, crepuscular population — rarely seen in full daylight, preferring the hush of dawn, dusk and low cloud. Smell: a cold, green perfume of wet moss and crushed harakeke with an undernote of sweet, unfamiliar incense. Sound: thin, high koauau-like flute notes, distant singing and sudden, echoing laughter that can stop a traveller in their tracks. Temperature: the air around them reads noticeably cooler and damper, a chill that gathers on exposed skin and lingers after they have gone. Physically they behave like ephemeral beings — light-sensitive, fleet-footed, and prone to leaving anomalous pale footprints in dew or a whisper of spun mist where they pass.
