Phaya Naga

Phaya Naga is a Deity — the great river-serpent that threads the Mekong's currents and the imaginations of river peoples. In field terms it announces itself not with spectacle but with altered water and air: the river surface will take on a long, sinuous ripple as if a ridge moved beneath, and the light along the bank beads differently. Smell: damp clay, crushed lotus, faint incense and the mineral tang of slow water. Sound: a low, bell-like exhalation or distant thunder, punctuated by the soft, wide slap of a massive tail; insect chorus often falls silent near its passage. Temperature: a cool, clammy veil settles over the shore and the air acquires a sharp, ozone edge, as if a storm were passing only above the water.
