Pisacha Lore & Origins

Pisacha is a hostile spirit—an earthbound shadow that lingers at the edges of firelight and temple ruins. In the field it presents as an absence that smells faintly of cold iron and damp leaf-mold rather than rot, emits a dry, breathy rasp and a low, repetitive chuckle, and brings with it a sudden, bone-deep chill; the air around it feels heavier, as if the night itself has thickened.

Observations
  • A tell-tale sign is a shadow that does not match any light source and a whisper that mimics the last words you heard; mirrors or still water may show a face blurred at the edges.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Avoid lingering at cremation grounds, abandoned temples, or burial mounds at night; keep a lamp or steady fire, do not answer voices that imitate friends or family, and do not sleep alone in places known for restless presences.
  • defense: Expose it to steady light and sacred sound: consecrated ash (vibhuti) or iron set at thresholds, a steady oil lamp, and sustained protective chant or prayer will unbalance or drive it back; when possible seek a learned priest or elder for formal rites rather than confronting alone.
  • offering: Small, ritualized offerings—black sesame seeds, a lit lamp of clarified butter, or the recital of protective verses—are reported in tradition to calm local hauntings temporarily; treat such measures with cultural respect and seek guidance from tradition-bearers.

  • Vedic mantras
    Sustained chanting of specific Vedic or Sanskrit mantras breaks its hold and forces the pisacha to flee or weaken.
  • Havan / Sacred fire
    Exposure to consecrated fire from a havan or intact funeral pyre burns and disperses its form.
  • Sunlight
    Direct daylight disrupts its ability to remain manifest and greatly reduces its power and mobility.
