Pishtaco Lore & Origins

Pishtaco is a Hostile (Monster) of the high Andes: a lanky, humanlike predator that favors lonely trails and isolated homesteads after dusk. Smell: a thin, acrid odor of burnt hair and tallow with an undernote of stale lamp oil. Sound: distant, deliberate boot-scrapes and the soft whisper of cloth against stone—never a full shout, but the hush before a storm. Temperature: the air around it feels strangely warm and oily, as if a lamp were burning in a sealed room. Field-naturalist note: encountered in thin-air passes and grazing terraces, it moves with calculated patience, leaving faint slick patches and disturbed dust rather than a chaotic trail; its gait is human, but its intent is predatory and single-minded.
Origin: Andean (Quechua/Aymara) • Central Andes (Peru, Bolivia)
Classification: Monster

Pishtaco Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • One tell-tale sign is sudden, unexplained loss or discoloration of stored animal fat or tallow and small, elongated boot-like prints near a disturbed storage area or path.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not travel alone after dusk in remote highland areas. Stick to well-traveled routes, keep tracks and pens well-lit, and keep guard animals or companions on watch. Secure storage of fats and oils in sealed containers indoors.
  • defense: Maintain bright, continuous light at homesteads and along trails; noise and company deter stalking behavior. If confronted, create distance and move to populated areas; dogs and alert livestock often warn of approach. Use reflective surfaces or sudden illumination to disorient and break the predator's stealth. Report sightings to local communities so others can take precautions.
  • offering: Some traditional accounts mention leaving out animal fat or lamp oil as a decoy; this is unreliable and discouraged as a primary strategy—better to secure stores and avoid isolation.

Pishtaco Abilities & Powers

  • Harvest of Fat
Silently incapacitates lone victims at night and surgically extracts or siphons human fat to be used as grease, lamp oil, or ritual wealth.
  • White-Man Guise
Appears as a benign foreigner, muleteer, or white stranger to gain trust and lure isolated travelers or householders.
  • Nocturnal Vanish
Moves with unnatural quiet through mountain night and can melt into shadows or disappear into a horse's wake after an attack.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Pishtaco

  • Coca Leaf Ward
Sacred coca rubbed on the body or threshold is traditionally believed to repel or reveal a Pishtaco's presence.
  • Sunlight Exposure
Daylight disrupts its stealth and forces it to retreat; attacks are overwhelmingly nocturnal.
  • Salt Threshold
A line of salt or ash across a doorway is a common apotropaic barrier that hinders entry.
  • Community Vigilance
Dogs, watchmen, and traveling in groups negate its opportunity to isolate victims and greatly reduce its success.
