Redcap
"Anglo-Scottish Border is home to Redcap, a hostile fae of border folklore."
Redcap Lore & Origins
Redcap Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
- Tiny iron-shod prints leading to a parapet and a damp, rust-red cap left draped on a stone are the most reliable sign of a Redcap's presence.
- avoidance: Avoid isolated ruins at dusk and do not touch or disturb small caps or garments found on battlements. Travel in daylight, keep to the main paths, and mark your route so you do not circle back into a lair. Do not respond to beckoning noises coming from windows or stairwells.
- defense: Carry iron (nails, a small horseshoe or an iron token) as a deterrent and keep to open, well-lit ground; loud continuous noise and retreat to higher, exposed positions usually break the Redcap's focus. If confronted, create distance and withdraw—these creatures favour cramped, ambush-friendly spaces and rarely pursue over open terrain.
Redcap Abilities & Powers
- Blood-Dyeing CapIts iron cap must be freshly stained with the blood of victims; while blood-dark the cap channels vitality and ferocity into the Redcap.
- Murderer's PikeWields a heavy iron pike that rends flesh and clothing, and each strike aids in replenishing the cap's required blood-stain.
- Blood-Sense of RuinsDetects fresh blood across ruined keeps and battlefields, allowing it to track wounded or lone travelers even in utter darkness.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Redcap
- Cap RemovalIf its blood-stained cap is taken away or cleaned the Redcap loses its vitality and becomes inert or diminished.
- Holy Symbols & PrayerDisplay of a cross or the audible recitation of Christian prayers repels or binds it, forcing retreat from its haunt.
- SunlightDirect daylight weakens and slows the Redcap, reducing its speed and aggressive drive.
