- behavior: Primarily solitary and crepuscular, salamanders are drawn to persistent heat sources (hearths, kiln fires, natural outcrops of warm stone). They investigate slowly, stealing small pieces of pitch, resin, or charred material, and will retreat into embers when threatened. Territorial around chosen hearths but not predatory toward people unless provoked or cornered.
