Santa Muerte

Santa Muerte is a Deity that moves like a cool draft through candlelit rooms: skeletal, serene, and insistently present. In the field she registers as an incorporeal authority — not a prowling predator but an insistence that bargains be honored. Smell: a layered perfume of copal smoke and crushed cempasúchil (marigold), with the faint mineral tang of old metal. Sound: the steady hush of votive flames, the soft clink of coins on a wooden tray, and the distant, slow toll of a bell; prayers arrive like folded paper on the wind. Temperature: noticeably cold — a cellar-like chill that gathers at the nape of the neck, as if heat is being politely taken elsewhere.
