- A semicircular series of deep, overlapping scale-impressions pressed into soft mud along river bends, paired with a lingering resinous warmth and a low, distant rumble at dusk.
- avoidance: Keep to high ground and well-traveled routes around known bends at dawn and dusk; avoid lone travel along slow rivers, do not corner it near shallow banks, and never attempt to drive it toward open water where it can leverage bulk.
- defense: Do not seek to kill; if confrontation is unavoidable, favor distance and mobility—use long poles, hooked ropes, and firebrands to distract and slow its advance and aim to tether rather than strike lethal blows. Drive to fortified, elevated positions and summon aid from communities or those versed in old binding rites and songs.
- offering: Fresh garlands, a loaf of bread left at the riverbend, or calm, rhythmic music have historical precedent for buying time or quieting its agitation; in legend, a hymn and gentle binding tethers pacified it rather than force.
