The Duat—the underworld of eternal night—was not empty. It was filled with the sound of sliding scales.
Apep, the World-Eater, coiled around the horizon. He was not a snake of flesh, but of shadow—a living void that drank light. His hiss was the sound of air escaping a tomb. He waited for the sun barge, ready to swallow the day.
But today, the sun did not come. Fire came.
Agni stepped onto the black sands. He did not walk; he burned. His skin was amber, his hair a mane of smokeless flame. He smelled of cedar oil and melted butter, a scent that cut through the stale rot of the underworld.
"You are not Ra," Apep rumbled, the darkness vibrating. "You are just... fuel."
The Shadow and the Hearth
Apep struck. He didn't bite; he flooded the world with darkness. A tidal wave of absolute blackness crashed down, threatening to snuff out Agni’s light like a candle in a gale.
Agni didn't retreat. He breathed.
Whoosh.
The God of Fire expanded. He became a pillar of flame, pushing the darkness back. "I am the mouth of the gods," Agni intoned, his voice crackling like dry wood. "And you are impure."
The darkness hissed as it touched the holy fire. Apep recoiled, his shadow-flesh blistering. The serpent shrieked, lashing out with a tail that could crush mountains.
It slammed into Agni, scattering sparks. The Fire God barely held his ground, his form flickering. Apep was heavy—the weight of eons of chaos.
Purification
"Die, little spark," Apep goaded, coiling tighter to strangle the light.
Agni closed his eyes. He focused not on the fire outside, but the fire inside. The heat of the offering. The spark of the soul.
"Purifying Conflagration," Agni whispered.
He exploded.
It wasn't an explosion of force, but of holiness. A blinding, white-hot nova radiated from his center. It didn't just burn; it cleansed.
The light tore through Apep’s shadowy coils. It scoured the darkness, turning the void into blinding day. Because Apep was made of shadow, he could not exist where the light was absolute.
The Serpent screamed as his very substance evaporated, unable to withstand the consecrated heat. The coils dissolved into harmless gray smoke.
Agni stood alone in the now-lit cavern, the last wisps of the Chaos Serpent fleeing into the deep cracks of the earth.
The Fire God smoothed his robes, which still glowed with the embers of victory. He looked East, where the real sun was beginning to rise.
"Path clear," Agni stated, and faded into smoke.
