Chimata-no-Kami stood where the three great roads met. He was the protector of travelers, but also the confused spirit who tested them. He wore robes of road-dust and carried a staff that pointed in all directions at once.
Crossroads Knot.
He twisted the space. North became West. Left became Right. Any mortal who stepped here would walk in circles until they starved.
"None shall pass without the riddle," the Kami declared to the empty air.
The Shadow from Above
The sun dimmed. A shadow, vast and intricate, covered the land.
Simurgh descended. She was the Bird of Ages, her feathers shimmering with the colors of copper and fire. She had lived long enough to see the world destroyed three times.
The Kami frowned. He shifted the roads again, trying to disorient the bird, to make the sky into a maze.
Simurgh landed softly. She did not look at the roads. She looked at the horizon. All-Seeing Counsel.
"The path is not the ground," she spoke, her voice like the rustle of ancient parchment. "The path is the intent."
The Clearing
The illusion of the Crossroads Knot flickered. Simurgh spread her wings.
Gale of the World-Tree.
She flapped once. A wind carrying the scent of creation swept over the intersection. The dust was blown away. The magical distortion unraveled. The road straightened, becoming a simple, honest path forward.
Chimata-no-Kami watched his riddle dissolve. He looked at the great bird, feeling the weight of her wisdom. He realized that blocking her way was like trying to block the passage of time.
He lowered his staff and bowed deep.
"You know the way," the Kami admitted.
Simurgh nodded, launching herself back into the sky, leaving a single feather as a signpost for those who would follow.
