The Genderuwo, a massive ape-like spirit from Javanese mythology, claimed the banyan grove. It smelled of wet fur and old fear. Savage Embrace. It loomed in the shadows, waiting for a villager to terrifying.
What walked into the grove was not a villager. It was a man with tattoos moving across his skin, carrying a giant jawbone hook. Māui.
The Genderuwo roared, a sound designed to stop hearts. Nightmare Weft. It expanded its shadowy form to block out the light.
Māui adjusted his hook. "Bro, I beat up the Sun. You think a shadow scares me?"
The Hook
The Genderuwo charged, spectral claws extended.
Māui grinned. "You look heavy."
He swung Manaiakalani. Hook Strike.
The enchanted jawbone didn't pass through the ghost; it snagged the spirit's essence like a fish on a line. The Genderuwo howled as it was jerked off its feet.
Reel Up an Island.
Māui braced his legs and pulled. He had hauled islands from the deep; a monkey-ghost was light work. He dragged the screaming Genderuwo out of the safety of the banyan shade and directly into a patch of harsh tropical sunlight. The spirit sizzled, shouted a curse, and dissipated into smoke, leaving Māui to wonder if there were any coconuts nearby.
