The Jangseung stood at the village entrance, a wooden totem with bulging eyes and a fanged grimace. It was the Guardian of the cardinal directions, carved to scare away demons. Warding Makgeolli Smoke. It shouted into the spirit world, "GO AWAY!"
The Kinnaree, a celestial nymph from the Himavanta Forest with the wings and legs of a swan, landed gracefully on the path. She was not a demon. She was beauty incarnate.
"You are very loud," she chirped.
The Grumpy Log
The Jangseung groaned, its wooden mouth creaking. "NO BIRDS. ONLY RESIDENTS."
It tried to project a wave of fear. Carved-Hand Grasp. Spectral wooden hands reached out to shoo her away.
The Kinnaree laughed, a sound like silver bells. She pirouetted over the clumsy grasp. Moonlit Enchantment-Dance.
"You need to relax," she sang.
The Garden
She began a melody of growth. Lily-Song Soothing.
The forest responded. Not with violence, but with aggressive decoration.
Vines of morning glory surged from the earth. They wrapped around the Jangseung’s pole. They curled around its angry eyebrows. They grew into its open mouth, blooming with fragrant blue flowers.
The Jangseung tried to shout, but all that came out was a muffled "Mmmph!"
Within moments, the terrifying guardian was completely covered in soft moss and beautiful blossoms. It was no longer a scary totem; it was a topiary. The Kinnaree adjusted a flower on its nose, bowed, and fluttered past, leaving the village protected by a very confused, very pretty log.
