The Jengu, a beautiful water spirit of the Sawa people, floated in the warm estuary waters. She had gap-teeth and long hair, and she hummed a Sirensong of the Mangrove to cure the local fish of disease. She was a creature of absolute benevolence.
On the muddy bank stood a black horse. It was shivering, its coat dripping wet. Shapeshift Veil. It looked lost and frightened.
The Jengu felt pity. "Poor thing," she thought. "You are far from your herd."
She drifted closer, extending a finned hand to comfort the beast. Jengu's Healing Blessing.
The Trap
The moment her fingers brushed the horse’s flank, the trap snapped.
The horse’s skin was not fur; it was a magical adhesive. Drowning Mount.
The Kelpie turned its head. Its eyes were no longer frightened; they were void-white and hungry. It didn't neigh; it roared.
The Jengu tried to pull away, but she was stuck fast. The Kelpie reared and plunged into the deep, cold channel. The Jengu’s healing magic was useless against pure predatory drive. She was dragged down into the silt and darkness, her song turned to bubbles, as the Kelpie carried its meal to the bottom to feast.
