The cranberry bog was frozen over. The Qallupilluit, an Inuit hag who lived under the ice, waited. Lamenting Lure. She hummed a strange, vibrating song, hoping to attract a child.
What she attracted was the Jersey Devil.
The cryptid swooped down from the pines, drawn by the noise. It landed on the ice, its hooves clicking. Bat-Winged Leap. It looked down, confused. "Where's the chicken?" it seemed to ask.
The Ambush
The ice exploded. The Qallupilluit burst forth, her sealskin sack open and ready. Ice-Sack Abduction.
"Mine!" she shrieked, grabbing for the Devil's leg.
The Jersey Devil did not like being touched.
It opened its mouth and let out a sound that defied nature.
Devil's Scream.
It was a high-pitched, oscillating shriek that shattered glass and burst eardrums.
Sonic Boom
The ice beneath them didn't just crack; it pulverized. The vibrational force turned the bog surface into a slushy soup.
The Qallupilluit, sensitive to sound and vibration, screamed in pain. Her world of silent, underwater stealth was shattered. Exposed to the air and the deafening noise, she panicked. She dove deep into the mud, abandoning her sack and her hunt.
The Jersey Devil flapped its wings, rising above the slush, and screeched once more for good measure before flying back to the treeline.
