The Kappa sat on a mossy rock by the riverbank, holding a cucumber. It was a civilized monster, mostly. It respected etiquette. When it saw the strange, long-necked leopard creature emerge from the reeds, the Kappa stood and bowed low, water sloshing in the dish atop its head. Politeness Trap. It expected the stranger to bow back, spilling its own power.
The Serpopard stared with golden, slit-pupiled eyes. It was a primal beast of the Nile, a canvas for chaos, not a student of Japanese manners. It saw prey presenting its neck.
The Long Reach
The Kappa held the bow for an uncomfortable amount of time. It peeked up. The creature hadn't moved. The Kappa shuffled its feet. "Cucumber?" it offered tentatively. Cucumber Bargain.
The Serpopard hissed, a sound like steam escaping a vent. It didn't want vegetables.
Suddenly, the Serpopard's neck shot forward with the speed of a striking cobra. Entwining Nile Coil. It closed the twenty-foot gap in a blink.
The Kappa tried to dive, but the muscular neck wrapped around its shell, lifting it bodily into the air. The Serpopard wasn't just long; it was strong. It constricted. The Kappa's shell creaked, then cracked. The water spilled from the Kappa's head as it was inverted, draining its strength instantly. The Serpopard dragged the limp turtle-boy back into the reeds. Manners, it turned out, were not a universal language.
