Māui walked into the Hall of Two Truths. He was wearing a disguise—a giant pigeon. Shape-Slip.
He planned to steal the Quill of Thoth.
Ma'at sat at her desk. She didn't look up. "Take off the feathers, demigod."
Māui turned back into a man. "Worth a shot. Hey, I heard you like balance. I balanced the sun! Slowed it right down."
"You tied it with ropes," Ma'at corrected, marking a scroll. "That is coercion, not balance."
The Verdict
Māui tried his next trick. He summoned his fishhook, Manaiakalani. "Look, I can fish up a new island for you. Beachfront property?"
He swung the hook.
Ma'at raised her own feather. Feather of Truth.
The hook stopped in mid-air. It didn't hit a shield; it hit the weight of its own reality. It was a jawbone, and Ma'at reminded it of that fact. The magic drain out of it. It clattered to the floor as a simple bone.
"Hey!" Māui protested. "That's an heirloom!"
"It is a lie," Ma'at said softly. "You rewrite the world to suit your whims. I hold the world to its nature."
She pointed the feather at Māui. Weighing of Hearts.
Māui felt a tug in his chest. His heart—full of schemes, pranks, and half-truths—felt heavy. He couldn't move. The weight of his own chaos pinned him.
"I pronounce you," Ma'at said, "Guilty of Disorder."
Māui found himself teleported outside, sitting in the sand, his hook dull and heavy. "Tough room," he muttered.
