Papa Bois, the hairy guardian of the Trinidadian forests, stood in his sacred grove. He held a horn and tapped the ground with his hoof. He sensed a terrible danger. Heat.
Perched in the highest branch of an ancient mahogany tree was a Phoenix. It preened its feathers, sending sparks cascading onto the dry leaves below. Aromatic Pyre Summons. The bird was preparing for a rebirth, and it needed a fire.
"Not here!" Papa Bois shouted, his voice the sound of cracking timber. "You will burn my children."
He stamped his foot. Briarbind.
Thick, thorny vines erupted from the earth, reaching for the bird to strangle it.
Combustion
The Phoenix looked down with eyes of molten gold. It flared its wings. Solar Flame Flight.
It didn't attack; it simply existed in its full glory. The air temperature spiked to a thousand degrees.
The vines reaching for the bird didn't catch fire; they vaporized. They turned to ash mid-air.
Papa Bois gasped as his own leaf-skin began to smolder. He realized the futility of the fight. He was wood; his opponent was sudden oxidation. As the canopy exploded into a firestorm, the Forest Guardian was forced to flee, diving into the nearby river to save himself, while the Phoenix sang its song of renewal in the heart of the inferno.
