Lore
Buto Ijo is a Hostile Monster — a hulking, green-skinned ogre in Javanese tradition that moves through riverine forests like a living landslide. Field notes: skin matte and moss-streaked, muscles corded beneath a sheen of oil and river slime; breath warm with a hint of smoke and fermenting fruit. Smell: wet earth, crushed kencur (a sharp root scent), and the lingering tang of smoke. Sound: a low, timbering bellow that vibrates through the soil, the sharp crack of saplings, and the distant, irregular drum of enormous footsteps. Temperature: radiates a heavy, close heat, like standing beside a sun-baked boulder, enough to wilt nearby foliage and send insects scattering.

Field Notes
Observations
- Large, oiled footprints 1–1.5 meters across, rimmed with crushed green leaves and a persistent smoky-ginger scent; nearby saplings snapped at chest height form a crude boundary.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not travel alone at dusk in lowland groves known for oral reports. Give any area with snapped trees and green-smear marks a wide berth. Keep campfires high, steady, and well-lit; avoid bright solitary colors that draw attention. Move quietly and in groups; never take trophies from the forest floor (they are often bait).
- defense: If encountered, prioritize escape and elevation — climb sturdy trees or move to rocky ground where its bulk is a disadvantage. Use sustained fire, concentrated light or reflective surfaces to disorient; loud, coordinated percussion (drums, horns) can buy time. If forced to defend, aim to create obstacles and maintain distance rather than prolonged engagement; distract with food offerings and withdraw while it investigates.
- offering: Large bundles of sticky rice, ripe bananas, and coils of bright red cloth left at the edge of its territory may delay aggression and provide a chance to withdraw.
Abilities
- Gada Ijo (Emerald Mace)Wields a colossal green mace whose impact emits a focused seismic wave that shatters stone and topples trees in a single blow.
- Earthrend StompStomps the ground to split soil and launch boulders, creating sudden ravines that can swallow or reroute pursuing forces.
- Rooted RegrowthWhen embedded in earth or jungle he rapidly seals wounds by drawing life from surrounding vegetation, knitting flesh with creeping moss.
Weaknesses
- Keris (sacred dagger)A blessed Javanese kris driven to his vital point severs his life-link and is repeatedly cited in wayang as the weapon that can fell him.
- Gandewa (Arjuna's arrow)The heroic arrow of Arjuna pierces his bulk and disrupts his battle fury, a canonical counter in many puppet-play defeats.
- Hill-BindingLegends bind him to a specific hill or grove—dragged far from that site his regeneration falters and raw strength drains away.
