Lore

Cadair Idris is a mountain-spirit wrapped in peat and cloud, a Fae-seat more than a person — the old chair of the giant Idris made manifest in rock and mist. Smell: damp heather, cold peat, and a faint metallic tang of old rain on stone. Sound: wind singing through clefts like whispered syllables, the distant cry of ravens and the soft, uncanny hush that falls when the ridge takes interest. Temperature: a precise, penetrating chill — not merely cold but sharpened, as if the air itself were remembering an ancient breath. In field notes I record a sense of attention: shadows gather in a chair-shaped hollow, and small noises seem to bend toward the cairns as though the mountain listens.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden chair-shaped hollow of mist on the ridge, an abrupt silence among birds, and a discrete drop in temperature where the ground feels listened-to.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Cadair Idris tests kindness and pride alike: sleepers may wake gifted with sharp poetic insight or fractured by fevered madness. It misnames travelers, rearranges cairns, mimics familiar voices to draw the curious off-route, and rewards riddles with ambiguous boons.
  • interaction: Approach with calm respect and humility. Offer a simple, honest gesture — a single written line of verse, a small cup of milk or water — and do not accept unexplained gifts or promises. Avoid sleeping on the mountain as a joke; if one seeks inspiration, do so with companions and leave clear markers. Speak your true name plainly and do not bargain for gifts you are not prepared to pay for.
  • offering: A short verse left in a cairn, a cup of milk or clean water, or a careful cairn kept intact — tokens of respect rather than riches.

Abilities

  • Seat of Two Fates
Any mortal who sleeps upon its summit is granted either prophetic poetic genius or lifelong madness, the mountain's spirit deciding fate in the night.
  • Idris's Star-Reading
At night the mountain projects the giant Idris's celestial visions, revealing hidden paths and truths to chosen dreamers through living constellations.
  • Moorland Mist
A sudden choking fog rises from its slopes to disorient travellers, hide treacherous ledges, and erase tracks from pursuers.

Weaknesses

  • Dawn's First Light
Exposure to the first sunrise disperses its dream-enchantments and forces sleepers back to waking clarity.
  • Consecrated Bell and Prayer
Loud church bells and spoken Christian prayers unravel the older mountain-spells and weaken its spirit's hold.
  • Wrought Iron at the Head
Placing iron at a sleeper's head breaks the dream-binding and prevents the Seat of Two Fates from taking hold.
