Lore

Domovoi is a Fae household guardian often spoken of like a small, shaggy elder who lives in the nooks of a home. Smell: a trace of woodsmoke, stale milk and warm bread—familiar, domestic scents that linger where one might expect a hearth to be. Sound: soft scuffs across floorboards, an almost-purring murmur beneath the rafters, the tiny clink of a spoon left overnight. Temperature: palpably cool, like a draft that borrows the memory of the hearth's warmth rather than its heat; presence feels intangible, a suggestion of a body rather than one you can touch. Field notes favor close observation: disturbances are domestic and intimate, leaving evidence in the bed, the baking, or the family animals rather than in the wild.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A small, soot-smudged thumbprint or tuft of hair left near the hearth or an empty saucer of milk gone by morning.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Tangles yarn, hides tools, nudges boots out of place, mimics footsteps at night and leaves small footprints; mischief escalates when the household is messy, disrespectful, or neglects offerings.
  • interaction: Treat the Domovoi as a member of the home: speak politely, keep the hearth and threshold clean, leave a small plate of porridge or milk on notable nights, and avoid loud insults. Name it carefully and keep household routines—consistency and respect keep favors steady.
  • offering: A saucer of milk or porridge, a crust of bread, or a bit of freshly laundered cloth placed near the stove or threshold.

Abilities

  • Hearth's Blessing
Anchors the household's fortune to the hearth—bestows prosperity and calm when honored, or sows persistent misfortune when neglected.
  • Lost-Thing Mischief
Deliberately hides or relocates small objects (keys, tools, shoes) to punish slovenly or disrespectful occupants.
  • Shape of the Old Housekeeper
Assumes the form of an elderly man, cat, dog, or shadow to move unseen through rooms and observe family conduct.
  • Midnight Vigil
Walks the house at night, easing animals and children to sleep or, if angered, rattling beams and waking inhabitants with ominous sounds.

Weaknesses

  • Absent Offerings
Refusal or omission of the nightly bowl of porridge, milk, or a place at the stove strips its goodwill and provokes mischief.
  • Relocation Without Farewell
If a family moves without formally asking or placating the Domovoi, it abandons the home or becomes actively vengeful toward the movers.
  • Iron and Cold Hearth
Placed iron on the hearth or letting the oven lie cold and empty weakens and repels the Domovoi.
