Lore
Eshu is a trickster-orisha who inhabits thresholds and crossroads, moving like a dry wind along the edges of villages and choices. Smell: a thin film of palm oil, smoke and warm earth that lingers where he has paused. Sound: the loose rattle of beads, a sudden chorus of small footsteps and laughter coming from more than one direction at once. Temperature: the air near him takes on a cool, crisp quality—an almost metallic chill that sharpens senses and makes words feel heavier.

Field Notes
Observations
- A scatter of red-and-black beads or a fresh smear of palm oil at a crossroads, often accompanied by the rattle of beads.
Encounter Advice
- mischief: Eshu delights in wordplay and shifted meanings: he misdirects travelers, swaps names in messages, causes bargains to hinge on a single ambiguous phrase, and rearranges small signs so routes and meetings diverge. His pranks test intention more than cruelty—those who are careless find themselves delayed or puzzled; those who are clever or honest may find unexpected openings.
- interaction: Address him directly and precisely; be careful with promises and phrasing. Leave a small, clear offering and state your request plainly. Do not attempt to trick him with vague bargains—Eshu answers the letter of a deal. Humor and respect soothe him; obstinacy or deliberate deception invites prolonged tangles.
- offering: Small gifts of palm oil, kola nuts, red-and-black beads, coins, or a modest cup of rum/sweet drink placed at a crossroads or threshold.
Abilities
- Crossroads DominionRearranges literal and metaphorical paths at intersections, redirecting fortunes, births, meetings and the outcomes of decisions for those who pass beneath his influence.
- Tongue-Twist (Speech of Eshu)Instigates sudden miscommunication or prophetic riddles by touching a speaker or message, turning clear meaning into chaos or revelation.
- Kola of FateImbues a kola nut or small token with decisive luck or doom, such that casting or offering it determines success, guilt or blessing in a ritual or dispute.
- Mask of Many FacesAssumes any guise—divine, human, animal or voice—to test, deceive or guide mortals and other spirits.
Weaknesses
- Ifa Binding VersesA precise recital of Ifa divination verses performed by a trained Babalawo can bind, command or temporarily silence Eshu when invoked correctly.
- Correct OfferingsReceiving the exact traditional offerings (fresh kola nut, palm oil, palm wine) placates him and removes his immediate hostility or caprice.
- Consecrated Iron of OgunTools or iron objects consecrated to Ogun and used ritually can repel or wound him more effectively than ordinary weapons.
