Fu Lions

Lore
Fu Lions — guardian deities cast as stone or bronze lions that stand vigil at thresholds and temples. Field notes: they present as a paired ecology — one bold, one watchful — their carved manes like frozen waves and their faces worn smooth by centuries of hands. Smell: the dry sweetness of incense and sandalwood braided with the mineral tang of rain on stone. Sound: the hollow echo of distant bells, the hush of silk and paper offerings, and the occasional faint chime when wind threads between their tails. Temperature: cool, stony to the touch, yet carrying a faint, stubborn warmth at their base, as if a slow ember of protection remains banked beneath the surface.

Field Notes
Observations
- A pair flanking an entrance — traditionally male with a ball under his paw and female with a cub — or the quiet presence of offerings and well-swept thresholds.
Encounter Advice
- taboo: Do not pass disrespectfully between the pair, do not remove their adornments or leave the threshold unclean, and never mock or deface their faces. Such slights are believed to invite misfortune until repaired by proper rites.
- reverence: Show respect by sweeping the threshold, lighting incense, placing a small coin or red ribbon at their feet, bowing before passing, and observing periodic cleaning or repair ceremonies to renew their protection.
- offering: Incense, a small coin, red ribbon, bowl of rice, or a tiny piece of jade placed at the base.
Abilities
- Imperial Seal of WardingA concentric ward emanates from the pair that repels malignant spirits and blights, forcing hostile ghosts to recoil or be bound to the stone base.
- Stoneform AnimationWhen threatened or invoked, a Fu Lion animates from its statue form into a living guardian able to move, fight and patrol its charge.
- Paw of BalanceThe male's globe or the female's cub acts as a focal charm that can stabilise luck, redistribute fortune between households, or seal a breached threshold.
- Cinnabar Eye DominionA ceremonial dot of cinnabar to the eyes awakens or strengthens their vigilance, enabling them to see through glamours and hidden malign intentions for a limited period.
Weaknesses
- Separated PairRemoving or separating the paired lions beyond a household's threshold breaks their shared ward and drastically reduces their power.
- Desecrated PedestalBreaking, overturning or burying the statue's base severs the lion's anchor to place and nullifies animation and many protective effects.
- Unauthorised Eye-DottingHaving the eyes 'opened' by an uninitiated or hostile hand can misbind the lion or invert its ward to favour the offender.
