Furies

Lore

Furies are chthonic deities of retribution — the field-naturalist's note records them not as blazing titans but as an intrusion of cold and law: the air tastes of copper and rain on stone, a low sibilant chorus threads the wind, and temperature falls to a bone-deep chill. In ruins, crossroads and threshold rooms where secret injuries linger they arrive as shadowed, winged silhouettes and coils of dark hair, their presence pruning the smallest sounds until only a hard, watchful silence remains. Even at a distance they give the landscape a taut, metallic hush, as if the land itself were holding its breath.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden, pervasive chill with candles guttering and ordinary noises dampening; those burdened by concealed crimes report an immediate, heavy sinking in the chest.
Encounter Advice
  • taboo: Do not conceal or excuse acts of blood within the kin; perjury, betrayal of oaths, and kin-slaying draw their ire. Never swear falsely in sacred places tied to family or law.
  • reverence: Appease by public acknowledgement and restitution: offer an open confession, speak a binding vow of justice in the presence of witnesses, and leave a simple libation (water mixed with ash or bitter herbs) at the threshold at dusk.
  • offering: A clear, spoken confession or a binding oath of reparation; a small bowl of water with ash or rue set at the doorstep at twilight.

Abilities

  • Curse of Remorse
Unleashes overwhelming, sanity-eroding guilt and insomnia that drives kin-slayers and oath-breakers to fevered torment and self-destructive acts.
  • Relentless Pursuit
Relentlessly track and harass the guilty across boundaries and sanctuaries until adjudication, exile, or death removes their claim.
  • Chthonic Summons
Call forth lesser Erinyes and night-spirits to swarm a location, amplifying paranoia, misfortune, and social ostracism against the target.
  • Serpentine Lash
Manifest venomous serpents in hair or lashes to physically wound or brand victims, leaving visible marks that provoke communal suspicion.

Weaknesses

  • Judgement at Areopagus
A formal trial and exoneration—especially by Athena or a recognized tribunal—severs their legal claim and forces withdrawal.
  • Binding Oath before Zeus
A solemn, witnessed oath sworn before Zeus (or a sanctioned deity) can neutralize their claim of vengeance and halt pursuit.
  • Suppliant Rites at an Altar
Immediate placation via suppliant rites (libation and offerings at a temple) soothes and delays their onslaught but does not destroy them.
