Lore

Ghoul is a nocturnal, hostile graveyard predator often described in field notes as a lank, humanoid form that moves with unsettling patience. Smell: a sickly-sweet oil and old rot, like long-stagnant fat warmed by the night air with a metallic undertone. Sound: a low, wet rasp—nails against stone, the soft scour of something dragged, and on rare occasions an eerie mimicry of distant voices. Temperature: the air around a ghoul saps warmth; nearby surfaces feel damp and clammy, as if the ground itself exhales a bone-chill. Observed behavior suggests a creature drawn to the unguarded, the disturbed, and to sites where death has been left uncovered.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A tell-tale sweet, oily rot on the wind combined with shallow, dragging footprints or freshly disturbed earth at a burial site.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not approach. Leave the area quietly by a lit route, avoid graveyards, ruinous waysides, and isolated camps after dusk. Keep to well-traveled paths and maintain light sources; do not investigate mimicked calls or voices.
  • defense: Bright, sustained light and fire are the most reliable deterrents—maintain a brazier or torch if trapped outdoors. Create distance and move to locked or elevated shelter; loud noise and sudden illumination frequently cause retreat. If contact is unavoidable, focus on escape rather than engagement; tools that maintain light or force withdrawal are preferable.
  • offering: Practical appeasement is limited. The most effective mitigation is respectful treatment of the dead: reburying exposed remains and sealing disturbed sites reduces attraction. In desperate field situations, creating a distant distraction of light and noise can draw attention away from people.

Abilities

  • Voice-Mimicry Lure
Mimics the voices of loved ones or lost travelers to draw victims into isolation or ambush.
  • Corpse-Feast Regeneration
Consuming fresh human flesh or unburied corpses rapidly heals wounds and restores vigor.
  • Grave-Slip Ambush
Slides into sand or loose earth to vanish from sight and launch surprise attacks from graves or dunes.

Weaknesses

  • Recitation of Quranic verses aloud
Sacred recitation repels and stuns the ghoul, breaking its mimicry and forcing retreat.
  • Fire
Open flame sears its putrescent flesh, preventing regeneration and causing lasting injury.
  • Sealed graves / locked coffins
Denying access to corpses starves the ghoul of its primary sustenance and weakens it over time.
