Grootslang

Lore

Grootslang is a hostile cryptid — an enormous, primeval fusion of serpent and pachyderm recorded in cave lore. Field notes describe a long, muscular serpentine body ringed in thick, overlapping scales and a broad, tusked head that moves with deliberate, ponderous intent. Smell: a persistent sulphurous tang undercut by damp earth and a faint metallic scent, as if old stones were sweating. Sound: a low, subsonic rumble like distant thunder, punctuated by a wet, hissing breath and the scrape of vast coils against rock. Temperature: the air around it feels unnaturally warm and humid, as though the cave itself exhales heat. It favors deep river gorges and black caverns where glittering seams of stone disappear into darkness, and is often associated with lost hoards of gems.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A steady sulphur smell at a cave mouth paired with the unexpected glint of freshly disturbed gemstones and a low, rolling rumble that makes small stones vibrate.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not enter narrow caves that show fresh glitter or polish on the walls. Travel in daylight and in groups when near suspected lairs. Do not pursue shiny fragments or chase echoes; sudden movement and loud solitary noises will provoke investigation. Mark and leave the area, and warn others rather than trying to recover valuables.
  • defense: If detected at distance, withdraw calmly to higher or more open ground and avoid cornering it. Use sustained bright light, broad smoke, or reflected light to confuse and discourage an approach; loud, chaotic noises can buy time but may escalate curiosity. Climb or use vertical terrain if available — it is less effective in cramped, vertical spaces. The primary strategy is evasion and escape rather than confrontation.
  • offering: A decoy of glittering minerals placed at a safe distance can distract it and allow escape; dull heavy stones or iron objects left at the cave entrance sometimes redirect its attention. Never offer living bait.

Abilities

  • Glamour of the Wonder Hole
Lays glittering diamonds as bait and weaves cavern illusions that lure miners and travellers into fatal passages and ambushes.
  • Primordial Constriction
Combines serpentine coils with elephantine weight to crush victims and collapse rock, able to close tunnels or snap bone with equal ease.
  • Gem-Sense & Hoard-Binding
Detects, attracts and briefly animates uncut gems, using them to dazzle, bind or corrupt those who touch its hoard.

Weaknesses

  • Exploitable Greed (Diamonds)
A compulsive obsession with uncut diamonds makes it fixate on gems to the point of ignoring strategic threats or obvious traps.
  • Claustrophobic Traps
Its immense bulk and pride leave it vulnerable to engineered cave-ins, narrow chokepoints or being walled into sections of its own lair.
