Hades

Lore

Hades is a Deity of the Underworld—felt more than seen, an authority folded into stone and shadow. Smell: a chill of damp earth and old bronze, as if a temple has been closed for a century. Sound: low, resonant echoes—distant drips, the soft scrape of sand, and an almost inaudible murmur like many voices speaking under their breath. Temperature: a persistent, deep cold that leeches heat from hands and hushes the world, leaving feathers and leaves immobile. Field notes record a silhouette at cave mouths, the sudden silence of birds, and the metallic tang of air where pathways slope downward.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden, unnatural hush coupled with the scent of cold stone and the avoidance of animals; coins or small offerings left at thresholds tend to appear chilled or tarnished.
Encounter Advice
  • taboo: Never disturb graves, remove burial goods, or boast of cheating death. Do not call his name casually or challenge his claim over the dead; loud celebration or bright, ostentatious displays at portals to his realm are taboo.
  • reverence: Approach in silence and restraint: leave a single coin or a few pomegranate seeds at a threshold, pour a quiet libation (wine or honey) into the earth, bow the head and speak only the necessary words. Tokens are given with humility rather than spectacle.
  • offering: A pomegranate seed or two, a single coin placed on a threshold or bowl, and a small libation of wine or honey; a small, plain stone set at a grave or cave-mouth is also favorable.

Abilities

  • Sovereignty of the Dead
Instantly claims, commands and binds the newly deceased and shades to the will of the Underworld, preventing escape or return unless bargain or ritual permits it.
  • Helm of Darkness
Wields the Cap of Invisibility to traverse between realms unseen and to negate divine or mortal sight for brief spans.
  • Pomegranate Bond
A single taste of Persephone's pomegranate seeds forges a supernatural tie that anchors a living or returned soul to Hades' domain.
  • Plouton's Touch
Calls up subterranean wealth or curses the earth — revealing veins of ore and riches or blighting crops and lands as judgement or boon.

Weaknesses

  • Persephone's Seasonal Return
When Persephone spends her appointed months aboveground, Hades' direct influence on the living world and certain rites is reduced.
  • Olympian Law
Bound by ancient accords among the Olympoi, Hades cannot slay or utterly annihilate fellow gods nor flagrantly overturn their decrees without severe consequence.
  • Withheld Offerings
If mortals systematically cease chthonic offerings (obols, black rams, libations), Hades' ties to the mortal sphere and some aspects of his power wane.
