Lore

Hans Trapp is a Hostile (Monster) of winter lanes and shuttered farms — a gaunt, hunchbacked figure wrapped in matted rags, half-man, half-shadow. Smell: the bitter smoke of peat and singed wool, undercut by the damp rot of leafmold. Sound: a dry rasp of breath, the clack of birch rods and a sack that never rests, sometimes the distant tin of a single bell. Temperature: an unnatural, seizing cold that fogs breath, frosts windowpanes and leaves the skin numb to touch. Field notes compare him to a living weather: he arrives with wind and the hush that follows a struck bell.

Field Notes

Observations
  • The tell-tale sign is the slow, dragging stride of oversized footprints stained with ash or soot and the soft clatter of a suspended sack.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not walk unlit paths on long winter nights; keep children indoors after dusk, secure shutters and leave a steady light in a front window. Avoid angering or taunting his name aloud near isolated homesteads.
  • defense: Create noise and light: ring bells or strike iron, place a steady lamp in the doorway, and retreat toward a crowded or consecrated building. If forced to face him, make for company and noise rather than confrontation.
  • offering: A small loaf, a token of honesty (a tidy shoe or hand-stitched cloth), or a lit lantern left on the sill is said to distract or pacify him long enough to pass.

Abilities

  • Chimney Drag
Slips down chimneys at night to seize misbehaving children and haul them into his sack or coach.
  • Iron-Clog Stamp
Strikes the threshold with his iron-clad clogs, shuddering timber and summoning trembling fear that disorients households.
  • Ledger of the Naughty
Names he writes in his ledger bind a child's fate for the season unless countered by a specific saintly token or ritual.

Weaknesses

  • St. Nicholas' Blessing
Relics, blessed bread, or the presence of St. Nicholas' emblems drive him off and void entries in his ledger.
  • Church Bells at Dawn
The ringing of morning bells forces Hans Trapp to flee and robs him of much of his nocturnal power.
