Lore

Hulder is a Fae of the deep forest—at first glance human, but with subtle dissonances that betray an otherworldly origin. Field notes record a figure clothed in damp green and autumn leaf, hair like tarnished gold, a back that falls away into the semblance of bark or a hollowed trunk, and a small fox- or cow-like tail glimpsed when movement is careless. Smell: the green, clean musk of crushed moss and juniper with a faint warm undertone of hay. Sound: low, lilting song carried on the understory wind, the distant clink of a small bell, and the soft rustle of leaves that answer a footstep. Temperature: cool and shaded—a lungful of forest dusk—yet oddly intimate, as if the air around them holds a pulse separate from the day.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A tell-tale hollowed back like peeled bark or the sudden glimpse of a small tail (fox or cow) when a path runs unusually silent.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Leads solitary travellers along looping trails, borrows milk and leaves no trace, swaps signposts or compels a tired herd to stray. Mischief follows rules—insult or broken promise escalates pranks into long-lasting misdirection.
  • interaction: Approach with quiet respect: do not stare at the back, speak plainly, and keep any bargains. Offer small, tidy tokens (a bowl of fresh milk, a clean comb, or folded cloth) and perform honest tasks if asked. Politeness and punctuality are more binding than loud courage.
  • offering: Fresh milk, neatly laid bread, a comb or ribbon left where paths meet the grove; tidy the threshold of a humble cottage to earn a returned favor.

Abilities

  • Tail-Lure Glamour
She unfurls or glints her animal tail and weaves a specific glamour that makes lone travelers abandon their path and follow her into the woods.
  • Barkback Revelation
When her hollow, bark-like back is exposed the illusion protecting her identity shatters, collapsing nearby fae glamours and instilling terror or shame in her followers.
  • Midnight Cattle-Boon
As reward for kindness she stealthily blesses a farmstead with extra milk or fattened cattle, or, if offended, saps a family's livestock overnight.

Weaknesses

  • Iron
Raw iron repels her presence and weakens her glamour, preventing approach or seduction.
  • Exposure of the Hollow Back
Forcing her to reveal the hollow, wooden cavity along her spine breaks her magic and can bind or banish her.
  • Bridal Token Binding
Being given a genuine bridal token or marriage belt by a mortal can tie her to a household and strip roaming privileges.
