Lore

Huldra is a Fae of the Scandinavian woodlands, a figure at the verge of human sight—often human-shaped, unexpectedly tall, with hair like damp bark and an outline that never quite belongs to any one season. Smell: the sharp sweetness of pine sap and fresh-moss, with a faint hint of smoke as from a distant hearth. Sound: a soft linen-like brush of movement through leaves, punctuated by a distant, teasing chime of cowbells or a single clear laugh like a creek over stone. Temperature: the air around her reads cool and twilight-damp, a few degrees colder than the surrounding forest, as if night itself leans in.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A single tell-tale sign is the glimpse of a tail or a hollow, bark-like depression along her spine—a feature she keeps hidden from hurried eyes.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Favors and distractions in equal measure: she may lead a lone traveller off a well-known track with flattering conversation or a fire-lit invitation, rearrange tools and small belongings, tend (or take) livestock in ways that confuse owners, and bind bargains with unexpected small costs if promises are not kept.
  • interaction: Approach with politeness and restraint: do not stare at her back or force physical contact. Offer simple, honest gifts rather than bargains—share bread, a bowl of milk, or a scrap of wool—and speak in plain terms. If you feel caught in her attention, thank her and withdraw slowly without mockery; breaking promises or showing contempt invites continued mischief.
  • offering: Bread (preferably wholemeal), fresh butter or milk, a bit of boiled grain or a small scrap of wool.

Abilities

  • Sirenwood Glamour
Weaves an irresistible beauty and song that enthralls travellers, causing them to follow her into the woods and lose all sense of time.
  • Bark-Back Veil
Displays a hollow, bark-like back to merge with trees and assume near-perfect arboreal camouflage or to reveal her otherworldly nature on purpose.
  • Tail's Bargain
Uses her distinctive cow- or fox-like tail to seal promises—bestowing fortune and fertility to those who honor her, or inflicting deep misfortune when betrayed.

Weaknesses

  • Tail Exposed
If her tail is discovered or revealed, her glamour collapses and she is compelled to leave or loses her hold over mortals.
  • Christian Rites
Church bells, prayers, and overt Christian ritual commonly repel or weaken her influence in folklore.
  • Wrought Iron
Contact with wrought iron disrupts fae enchantments and can ward her off.
