Lore
Kinnaree is a Fae — a lithe, avian-bodied nymph from Thai lore, woman from the waist up and a silver-feathered bird below. Field notes record sightings at river edges and misty clearings at dawn and dusk: plumage that catches moonlight, movements like a practiced dancer, and an air of deliberate grace. Smell: cool jasmine and the scent of wet linen; the river after rainfall. Sound: a clear, bell-like laughter and the distant twang of a stringed instrument; wings whisper like silk on glass. Temperature: presence brings a soft chill, like stepping into morning mist — not hostile cold, but a crisp, otherworldly cool.

Field Notes
Observations
- A single, perfectly pressed bird-footprint on a lotus leaf or a stray silver feather that sheds dew even in midday.
Encounter Advice
- behavior: Crepuscular and shy: Kinnaree dwell in secluded river bends and enchanted groves, spend hours grooming, dancing, and teaching songs to river creatures. They keep to the borders between human settlements and deep forest, collecting lost things and guiding young or lost travelers rather than seeking conflict.
- interaction: Approach with quiet respect at dawn or twilight. Speak softly, do not rush or reach suddenly. Leave simple offerings (flowers, a hum of a tune) rather than loud gifts. They respond to graceful movement and music more than words and will often observe, mimic, or vanish rather than engage in confrontation.
- offering: White jasmine or lotus blossoms, a small woven cloth or ribbon, and a soft melody hummed at first light.
Abilities
- Moonlit Enchantment-DancePerforms an ornate moonlit dance that mesmerizes mortals, freezing hostile intent and binding observers in reverent awe until the dance ends.
- Mirror-Feather VeilUnfurls iridescent feathers that weave living illusions of the forest, hiding allies and misleading pursuers with reflected moonlight.
- Vengeful Quill CurseMarks and slowly withers any thief who steals a Kinnaree feather, causing misfortune and a compulsion to return the feather or be haunted until they do.
- Lily-Song SoothingSings an ancient lullaby that calms wounds and sorrow, easing anguish of those who listen beneath moonlit lotus blooms.
Weaknesses
- Plucked FeathersRemoval of wing or tail feathers strips flight and much of the Kinnaree's glamour until the feathers regrow, leaving them vulnerable and mortal-feeling.
- Desecrated GroveIf the Kinnaree's Himavanta grove or sacred lotus beds are burned or razed, their magic wanes and they may be bound to grief and the mortal plane.
