Kuchisake-onna

JapaneseYōkaiUrban Legend

Lore

Kuchisake-onna is a Yōkai encountered at twilight and in the quiet pockets of towns — a woman draped in ordinary clothing whose face is concealed by a surgical mask. Sightings are marked by an unnatural chill, the faint tang of antiseptic and cold metal in the air, and the soft, deliberate whisper of a question. She moves without the usual human cadence: steps measured, voice small but insistent. Up close there is an odd absence of body heat, and the cadence of her approach can be mistaken for the rustle of a coat in the wind. Field notes: she prefers edges — alleys, schoolyards after dark, and bus stops where light thins and people thin out.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A solitary surgical mask and the soft question, "Am I pretty?" delivered in a calm, persistent voice.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not stop to answer. Avoid isolated routes at night and stay in groups. If confronted, keep moving toward a well-lit, populated area and call for help; ambiguous replies like "so-so" are traditionally said to confuse her, but the safest option is no engagement and immediate retreat.
  • defense: Prioritize escape and drawing attention: use a phone flashlight or shout to summon bystanders. Create distance and place barriers (doors, cars) between you and the figure. Physical confrontation is risky — aim to flee rather than fight. If trapped, target obstructions to slow pursuit and head for public safety.
  • offering: Folklore mentions distracting her with hard candy or coins; such measures are unreliable—consider them stories rather than strategies.

Abilities

  • Smile-Sunder
Compels a target to answer her question about beauty and, when met with an evasive or unsatisfactory reply, rends the victim's mouth with a blade or hands, inflicting permanent maiming and terror.
  • Mask of Normalcy
Appears as an ordinary, masked woman to lower suspicion and approach victims in public without immediate detection.
  • Echoed Question
Repeats or mimics a loved one's voice asking the same question to sow hesitation and force the target into a compelled response.
  • Relentless Pursuit
Can follow a named or addressed victim over long distances and time until the curse is satisfied or a countermeasure is used.

Weaknesses

  • Ambiguous Compliment
Answering her query with an intentionally vague response such as 'You're average' or 'So-so' confuses her compulsion and creates an opening to flee.
  • Thrown Offerings
Tossing small items—commonly coins or hard candy—distracts her long enough for escape or breaks pursuit.
  • Mirror Confrontation
Holding a mirror so she sees her own slit mouth can stun or unbalance her by forcing self-recognition.
