Lore
Kumiho — Hostile Fae (fox spirit). Seen at the limits of settlement and in quiet mountain passes, it appears as a lithe fox with many tails or as an unnervingly calm human shadow whose eyes reflect like burnished bronze. Smell: a sharp metallic tang woven with crushed wild garlic and dried leaves, as if iron and autumn forest met in a single breath. Sound: near-silent paw-steps or soft, misplaced laughter carried on the wind; at times a whisper of silk and fallen pine needles. Temperature: a sudden, localized chill that cuts through clothing, like the draft from a shuttered room opened to winter. Field notes: moves with patient intent, studies prey before choosing a moment to strike; leaves subtle, repeated traces—flattened grass, three-toed tracks, and the faint impression of fur on cold stone.

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden, concentrated chill paired with the metallic herb-scent and the fleeting glimpse of multiple tails in peripheral vision.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not travel alone at dusk or into isolated hollows; decline unexpected offers of shelter or private hospitality from strangers, and avoid following or answering oddly human voices at the tree-line. Keep companions and maintain a clear line of sight to escape routes.
- defense: Remain in light and near open ground—dawn and full sunlight reduce its boldness. Keep iron or iron-edged tools visible and a small pouch of salt; mirrors or polished metal can reveal its true form and disrupt its guile, allowing time to retreat. If forced to stand ground, create distance and move toward populated, lit areas.
- offering: A modest, simple offering left at a crossroads—plain rice or steamed grain—may distract or delay its attention, though it should not be relied upon as protection.
Abilities
- Heart & Liver DevouringThrough seduction or ambush the kumiho extracts and consumes a victim's heart or liver to steal vitality and prolong its human guise.
- Yeowoo-Gu Seul Sorcery (Fox-Bead)A magical bead (yeowoo guseul) holds the kumiho's life-force and memory and can be used to cast potent illusions or be stolen to cripple the creature.
- Seductive Nine‑Tailed GuiseThe kumiho assumes an irresistibly beautiful human form and layered glamour that manipulates perception and desire to entrap targets.
Weaknesses
- Yeowoo-Gu Seul TheftIf the kumiho's fox-bead (yeowoo guseul) is stolen it loses access to core magics and its ability to maintain perfect human form.
- Exposure of Nine TailsRevealing all nine tails to witnesses or forcing the kumiho to show its true form breaks its glamours and greatly weakens its influence.
- Buddhist Incantation and BindingSpecific sutra recitations and ritual bindings (Buddhist exorcism rites) can repel or seal a kumiho's movements and prevent transformation.
