Lore

Langsuir is a hostile vampiric spirit recorded across Malay and Indonesian oral tradition. Field notes describe a hollow, humanoid silhouette often glimpsed at dusk among coconut and palm stands: long, unbound hair, a thin, swaying gait, and clothing that hangs like wet fabric. Smell: a sudden, unnerving scent of frangipani (plumeria) folded over a faint metallic tang. Sound: a high, keening wail that can mimic a newborn's cry or a woman's sob, carried in fits on the night breeze. Temperature: the air drops several degrees where she passes—damp, clammy cold that raises the skin and beads dew on exposed surfaces. The overall impression is of something incorporeal and relentless rather than bestial; it leaves no tracks but takes careful note of human vulnerability.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A patch of unusually cold, damp air scented with frangipani and the distant mimicry of an infant's cry.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not announce childbirth or display a newborn at night; keep postpartum mothers indoors and avoid palm groves at dusk. Keep windows and doorways well-lit and unobstructed; avoid lone travel near plantations after dark.
  • defense: Create simple physical barriers (thorny branches, rattan mats) at thresholds, place iron or steel items near cradles and windows, burn resinous smoke or protective herbs, and recite established protective prayers or charms. In tradition, careful burial or guarded placement of the placenta and quiet, private mourning rites reduce attention from the Langsuir.
  • offering: Optional small offerings of flowers, cooked rice, or smoke-cleansing herbs at a threshold may pacify restless spirits in some communities; always follow local custom when making offerings.

Abilities

  • Cradle Wail
A high, mournful keening that specifically induces miscarriage, stillbirths, or the slow wasting of newborns within earshot.
  • False-Bride Guise
Adopts the likeness of a grieving or beautiful woman to lure solitary men or complacent caretakers close at night.
  • Mother's Drain
Silently siphons life-force and blood from sleeping victims—especially breastfeeding mothers and infants—leaving them pale and weakened.

Weaknesses

  • Buried Placenta Binding
If the mother's placenta or umbilical cord is properly buried with her, the Langsuir is unable to form or loses power over the childlineage.
  • Iron Fastening
Driving iron nails through a coffin lid or fastening iron at the site of haunting disrupts its ability to pass through thresholds and weakens its manifest form.
  • Dawn Exposure
Prolonged exposure to the first light of day disperses a Langsuir's manifested form and forces it to withdraw to its lair.
