Lore

Merrow is a coastal fae—part sea-creature, part household spirit—most often recorded where kelp beds comb rocky shores. Field notes describe a wet, muscular silhouette slipping between wave and foam; hair like tangled kelp, skin the cool sheen of river-smoothed stone. Smell: a sharp, briny tang layered with crushed seaweed and the iron whisper of tide-rusted anchors. Sound: an undercurrent of voice—low, layered song that mimics gulls and oars, punctured by a bright, ringing laugh like shells clicking. Temperature: the air they inhabit is always damp and cool, the skin-prick of spray and the clammy hush of fog on your neck. Observers record a wary intelligence and an economy of movements that suggest ocean-born cunning rather than raw violence.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A lone red cap (cohuleen druith) or a looping, three-note kelp-song carried on the tide are the most reliable signs of a Merrow's presence.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Merrows delight in tidy, ocean-flavored pranks: loosening knots, leading small boats off the expected current by echoing gull calls, swapping a fisher's oar for a weed-wrapped stick, or filching bright buttons and tools. They keep bargains exactly as spoken—many tricks arise from careless promises made near the water.
  • interaction: Approach with restraint and courtesy. Never seize a cap or try to drag a Merrow ashore. Leave simple, sea-true offerings (a polished shell, salted biscuit, or a ribbon of red cloth) on exposed rocks at low tide and answer their song with a single, steady whistle rather than words. If bargaining, speak plainly and count your promises; they will honor the letter of an agreement but not its assumed spirit.
  • offering: Polished shell or a strip of red cloth; simple, non-food tokens left at low tide calm curiosity and often secure safe passage.

Abilities

  • Cohuleen Threshold
Possesses a magical cohuleen (cap/coat) that anchors a Merrow between sea and shore — worn it grants free passage and sea-ward power, removed it traps or humanises the wearer and severs the Merrow's tide-binding.
  • Pearl-Lament
A mournful, shell-toned song that enthralls coastal folk and calms or rouses sea life within earshot, able to lure sailors toward rocks or soothe storms.
  • Mirror-Comb Glamour
Uses polished shells, combs or mirrors to weave brief illusions of safe harbours, lost loves, or false kin to beguile or bind a target.

Weaknesses

  • Cohuleen Theft
If their cohuleen is stolen or withheld the Merrow loses its sea-ward powers, becomes bound to land and suffers rapid ebbs of strength and magic.
  • Cold Iron
Exposed iron wounds or iron charms disrupt Merrow glamour and burn their flesh and magic.
