Lore

Patasola is a Folk Monster — a solitary, one-legged forest spirit recorded by rural observers as a remnant of a wronged human turned predatory. In situ she announces herself by a sudden chill and a damp, earthy scent: wet soil, crushed leaves and a faint metallic tang like old iron. Her sound signature is unsettlingly distinctive — a single, irregular footfall, a woman's laugh that can slip into the plaintive cry of a child, and often an abrupt hush among the birds. Temperature readings around sightings drop noticeably; moss and undergrowth feel slick and clammy underfoot where she has passed. Field notes emphasize the uncanny stillness that follows her passing rather than visible wounds or gore.

Field Notes

Observations
  • One deep, solitary footprint or an arc of crushed plants showing travel on a single limb; nearby birdlife falls silent and a lone, shifting laughter or childlike cry is heard.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Avoid solitary travel at dusk or night in dense forest. Do not answer or follow unfamiliar voices or the sight of a lone woman near trails. Travel in groups, keep a steady fire or strong light, and mark your route so you do not become disoriented.
  • defense: Do not attempt confrontation. Create distance and move toward open ground or water; maintain light and continuous noise to unsettle her approach. Traditional deterrents include iron or bright reflective metal and keeping dogs as early-warning; summon help rather than pursue.
  • offering: Small folk offerings at the forest edge (corn or salt) are reported in local lore to placate certain woodland spirits, but they are no guarantee with a hostile entity like the Patasola.

Abilities

  • Widow's Guise
Assumes the appearance of a lost, alluring woman to isolate and draw lone hunters into the jungle before revealing her monstrous single-legged form.
  • Hamstring Curse
A targeted malediction that cripples or severs a victim's legs, leaving them immobilized and unable to escape the forest.
  • Forest Wail
Emits a mournful, hypnotic cry that scrambles navigation, sows panic, and separates companions so she may pick them off.

Weaknesses

  • Sunlight
Direct daylight breaks her glamour and forces her to withdraw into deep shadow or hidden hollows.
  • Refusal to Answer the Call
If a person deliberately ignores or turns away from a lone woman's cry, the illusion cannot compel them and her influence over that target collapses.
  • Tobacco Smoke
Traditional tobacco smoke (e.g., rapé or rolled tobacco offered and blown into the wind) disrupts her presence and can force her to manifest or flee.
