Lore

Pere Fouettard is a Fae-like folk enforcer: a gaunt, soot-streaked man in a dark coat who travels winter roads as Saint Nicholas's grim companion. Smell: burned coal, old leather and the faint tang of vinegar. Sound: the soft rustle of a heavy sack, the creak of leather boots, a distant snap like a single crack of a whip and a low, dry chuckle. Temperature: a localised bite of cold, as if the air itself sharpens where he passes, making breath cloud and candleflames shiver. Field notes record him at thresholds and hearths, leaving small but unmistakable marks rather than open terror.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A smear of soot near a child's shoe or a lump of coal among gifts; a solitary, late-night whip-crack heard once outside the window.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Leaves coal, switches or bitter objects instead of toys; swaps small gifts, hides treats, and marks the ledger of misdeeds with an almost bureaucratic precision. He punishes to teach and warn rather than to revel in harm, enforcing rules with grim humor and exacting ceremony.
  • interaction: If confronted, acknowledge the fault plainly—Pere Fouettard respects candor. Leave a small, honest offering (see offering) and a clear promise to amend behaviour; loud defiance or trickery only draws sharper reprisals. Prefer public, communal rituals (Saint Nicholas's presence, shared bread) to lone bargaining.
  • offering: A small loaf or piece of gingerbread, a lit candle, or a symbolic lump of coal—simple tokens of contrition and honesty. Sincere apology and a promise to change carry more weight than grand gestures.

Abilities

  • Switch of Reckoning
Wields a bundle of switches whose lashes instill immediate, paralyzing shame and recall of misdeeds in naughty children.
  • Sack of Absence
Seals and carries off disobedient children in a dark sack to be hidden or threatened with punishment until repentance is offered.
  • Chimney Stalk
Slips down chimneys and through hearth-soot to appear suddenly at hearthside, bypassing normal doors and wards unless Saint Nicholas intervenes.

Weaknesses

  • Invocation of Saint Nicholas
Calling 'Saint Nicolas' aloud or the saint's visible presence repels him instantly and breaks his compulsion to punish.
  • Shoes with Gifts and a Lit Candle
Homes that leave shoes filled with clementines/gingerbread and a lit candle at the door are refused entry and considered under Saint Nicholas' protection.
  • Hymns to Saint Nicholas
Community singing of Saint Nicholas hymns disrupts his work and forces him to keep hidden until the song ends.
