Lore
Poludnitsa is a Fae of the noon fields, a figure tied to the sun's highest hour and the weary labour of harvest. Presence is felt as an oppressive, oven-like heat that seems to settle in the spine; the air carries the dry, crushed scent of hay and sunbaked earth with a faint metallic tang; sound becomes muffled—tools fall silent and distant voices thin to a whisper as if the world were listening. She is often glimpsed as a pale woman in plain dress or as a shifting shimmer among grain, her outline sometimes broken by a single glinting tool or the sudden hush of birds. A field-naturalist's note: sightings cluster on cloudless days when the sun is merciless and workers pause at the row's edge, dizzy and disoriented.

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden, oppressive hush over the field and a shimmering heat-ripple among stalks, sometimes accompanied by a lone silhouette near the crop rows.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not work at the height of noon; favour early morning or late afternoon for field labour. Rest in shaded places, keep to paths, and avoid lone work under a bare sky. Keep blades and sickles sheathed or turned inward when left on the ground; do not leave tools propped upright.
- defense: If confronted, do not admit weakness or answer her questions. Offer a small, sober token (bread, clean water) then move steadily away to shaded shelter. Traditional measures include scattering salt or grain in your path, making the sign or prayer of your household, and turning your tool so its cutting edge faces the earth. Loud, purposeful noise — stamping, calling companions — can break her hold.
- offering: A small loaf of bread, a cup of cold water or milk, or a handful of grain left at the field's edge; simple, modest tokens kept to the margin rather than given freely from your work.
Abilities
- Sunstroke EmbraceWhen encountered at midday she fills the air with oppressive heat and dizziness that causes workers to faint, suffer delirium, or collapse as if stricken by sunstroke.
- RiddlebindPoludnitsa compels victims to answer a taunting riddle or task; failure leaves them paralysed, mute, or driven mad until released.
- Stalk-Braid ConstraintShe animates wheat and grain stalks into living cords to entangle limbs, bind victims to the field, or drag them beneath the sheaves.
Weaknesses
- Answered RiddleA correct, clever answer to her riddle or task forces her to free the victim or relent.
- Blessed Cross or PrayerVisible Christian symbols or earnest prayer repel her presence and can make her flee the field.
- Midday ShadeAvoiding work outdoors between 11:00 and 15:00 (resting in shade or indoors) prevents encounters entirely.
