Lore

Poseidon is a Deity of the sea, storms, and the shifting bones of the earth. Field notes record him less as a figure and more as an elemental authority: the air tastes of cold brine and crushed kelp, lifted by a metallic ozone that stings the tongue; sound is a low, cavernous rumble—part surf, part distant thunder—and the steady slap of waves against cliffs as if the shore were breathing; temperature reads cool and damp, a salt wind that steals heat and tightens skin. Presence is accompanied by small, precise anomalies—compasses wander, coastal birds fall silent, and working animals become restless—signs that oceans and land are negotiating each other anew.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden trident-shaped column of foam or a localized, tremor-like shudder along the shoreline accompanied by a sharp tang of ozone.
Encounter Advice
  • taboo: Do not break an oath sworn by the sea or on a trident; do not willfully pollute or dump the living into his waters; never claim a spring or coastal shrine without making formal amends—such violations invite storms and quakes.
  • reverence: Before journeys across water, pour a libation of wine mixed with seawater and name him; offer the first catch back to the deep, dedicate woven ropes or carved tridents at coastal shrines, and honor horses and working animals as tokens of his domain.
  • offering: First catch or portion of a haul returned to the sea, a libation of seawater and wine, braided rope or a small carved trident, and respectful prayers before travel.

Abilities

  • Trident of the Deep
A single strike with his forged trident can split the sea, summon tidal waves or calm oceans, and command currents and sea life to do his will.
  • Earth-Shaker
Stomps or pierces the ground to trigger earthquakes, fissures, and tsunamis that topple ships and coastal fortifications.
  • Sea-Steed Gift
Bestows or births wondrous horses and hippocamps, imbuing mounts with supernatural stamina and affinity for both sea and shore.
  • Mariner's Bane
Curses offending sailors or cities with relentless storms, whirlpools, and baffling calms until atonement is offered.

Weaknesses

  • Trident Seizure
If his trident is taken or magically bound, his direct mastery over sea and quake-works is severely diminished.
  • Neglected Cult
Local power wanes where temples and proper offerings (especially white bulls and horses) are abandoned or outlawed.
  • Olympian Arbitration
Subject to decrees of the Olympian council (notably Zeus); direct judgment or chastisement by fellow gods can curb his actions.
