Lore

Pret is a Spirit (Hungry Ghost) — a gaunt, emaciated presence whose hunger shapes its legend more than its form. In the field a Pret reveals itself as a thin, wavering silhouette at the edge of sight: smell of sour, stale rice and old incense clings to the air; sound is a high, prolonged keening or the soft scrape of nails on wood; temperature drops to an unnatural, damp chill that gathers around doorways and offerings. Note the contrast between a bloated, empty belly suggested in stories and the incorporeal lightness of the apparition — unmistakably spirit-like rather than muscular or warm.

Field Notes

Observations
  • An overturned bowl of rice or an unconsumed plate outside a doorway, accompanied by a thin, keening sound at dusk and a sudden ring of cold.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Keep distance and bright light between you and the presence; avoid approaching unlit shrines or shadowed thresholds at dusk. Do not offer food from your hand or invite it into your living space. Close doors and windows, maintain a steady lamp or fire, and do not try to 'feed' it while alone or in the dark.
  • defense: Create a barrier of light and clean flame: lamps, incense, or a candle placed between you and the apparition. Sprinkle salt or ash across thresholds and carry a simple iron token or bell to break the silence; sustained protective chanting or recitation of sacred verses by a practiced person disperses the cling. If contact is inevitable, retreat calmly toward daylight or a consecrated area and seek a knowledgeable elder or monk.
  • offering: Small, simple offerings left outside — plain bowls of rice, water, or a flickering oil lamp — are said to distract or placate a Pret without inviting it inside.

Abilities

  • Insatiable Craving
A metaphysical hunger that siphons warmth and life from nearby living beings and offerings, leaving them cold and hollow.
  • Throat-Narrowing Curse
Its mouth is a needle-thin aperture that causes solid food to turn to soot or scorching ash on contact, preventing normal feeding.
  • Hungry Wail
A keening cry that attracts vermin, sours food stores, and spreads nightmares and malaise through a household for a night.

Weaknesses

  • Cooked Rice & Toasted Sesame
Small portions of cooked rice or toasted sesame temporarily satiate and calm a Pret, breaking its compulsive hunger and aggression.
  • Monastic Mantra
Chanting consecrated sutras or mantras binds or drives away a Pret and can reclaim it into ritual care.
  • Ash and Coarse Salt
Sprinkling ash or coarse salt irritates its narrow throat and disrupts its ability to siphon life from offerings.
