Preta

Lore
Preta is a spirit (hungry ghost) described in South Asian lore: gaunt and elongated, more shadow than body, marked by a tiny, pinhole mouth and an ever-empty belly. Smell: a clinging, sour tang of stale rice, incense gone to dust, and damp earth. Sound: thin, paper-like sighs and hollow throat-scrapes at dusk, like wind through an empty pot. Temperature: a sudden, bone-deep chill that gathers at thresholds and shrine corners. Field notes: sightings are often at the edges of feasts, near household shrines, or along lanes where loss and regret linger—an entity defined by longing rather than aggression.

Field Notes
Observations
- A localized, freezer-cold patch of air accompanied by the impossible scent of stale food and old incense.
Encounter Advice
- behavior: Wanders liminal spaces—near shrines, kitchens after feasts, burial grounds and crossroads. Active at dusk and dawn, it reaches for smells and offerings but cannot derive nourishment, resulting in persistent haunting and restless circling of places tied to strong attachments.
- interaction: Approach with respect and distance. Do not attempt physical contact. Leave simple, cool offerings (water, uncooked rice, unspiced porridge) at a threshold or shrine rather than placing food in an occupied space. A quiet blessing or a moment of remembrance calms presence; aggressive gestures or mockery tend to deepen attachment.
- offering: Clean water, uncooked rice, light incense, and a spoken dedication or moment of silence; in many traditions, transferring merit through a short prayer or respectful ritual is the proper appeasement.
Abilities
- Insatiable MawSiphons both physical nourishment and spiritual merit from food and living beings, leaving offerings empty and victims weakened while the Preta gains only fleeting satiation.
- Aura of SpoilageRadiates a hunger-taint that causes cooked food to rot and clean water to sour within its vicinity.
- Needle-Throat CursePossesses an impossibly thin gullet that prevents swallowing solids and compels the Preta to demand tiny, precise portions or lash out in desperation.
Weaknesses
- Pinda (Rice Ball)Sacramental rice offerings and thin gruel temporarily pacify its cravings and blunt its hunger-driven assaults.
- Sutra RecitalBuddhist sutra chanting and the formal transfer of merit relieve its torment and can release or banish a Preta.
- Narrow GulletThe needle-like throat that defines it also makes dense or metallic objects able to choke or immobilize it if forced into the mouth.
