Lore

Qallupilluit is a hostile Fae — a cold sea spirit of Arctic shorelines known in Inuit tradition for slipping beneath ice and water to claim the unwary, most often small children. Smell: a briny, kelp-stained tang with an underlying mineral note like old ice. Sound: a thin, wet clicking and the uncanny, distant wail or mimicry of a child that seems to come from beneath the floe. Temperature: the air around its presence chills to a bone-numbing cold, frosting breath and numbing exposed skin. Field notes record a patient, underwater stillness punctuated by sudden, slick disturbances at the ice edge; witnesses describe glimpses of green-streaked hair, trailing kelp, or a pale, wet face between ice hummocks rather than a solid, steady form.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A faint childlike cry from beneath the ice paired with trailing seaweed and small suction-like marks along the waterline.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Keep children and vulnerable travelers well back from the water's edge and under constant watch; travel in groups when near ice, maintain a clear light or fire at shorelines after dark, and never answer or mimic a child's call that seems to come from the ice or water.
  • defense: Do not enter thin ice or water to confront it; use long tools (poles, hooks, nets) from firm ground to break a grip or pry at the surface, create loud noise and bright light to disturb its hold, and haul victims away with controlled, even pulls rather than sudden dives. If rescue is required, prioritize getting people to solid footing quickly and warming them rather than pursuing the spirit into open water.
  • offering: Leaving a small, non-perishable token (a braided ribbon or a warmed piece of sealskin) at the shoreline as a cautionary ritual is reported in some accounts to calm the water's edge; such practices vary by community.

Abilities

  • Ice-Sack Abduction
Slips a dazed child into a cold, membranous pouch beneath the ice and carries them into underwater lairs for keeping or bargaining.
  • Lamenting Lure
Sings a plaintive, childlike wail that irresistibly draws unsupervised children toward thin ice and open water.
  • Seaweed-Hair Snare
Extends long, slimy green hair through cracks and holes to entangle limbs and drag victims downward.

Weaknesses

  • Lullaby Ward
A mother's familiar lullaby or a known family song breaks its compulsion and forces it to release a captive.
  • Open Flame
Fire, smoke or boiling seal oil causes it to recoil and retreat into deeper water.
  • Sunlit Shallows
Direct, sustained sunlight weakens its skin and disrupts its anchoring to the ice.
