Lore
Qiqirn is a spirit-beast of the arctic night, spoken of as a large, dog-like presence whose approach is more felt than fully seen. In the field it announces itself by a metallic, ozone-tinted chill that raises the hairs on the neck and the fur of sled dogs; the air carries a faint, stale tang—like old seal fat left beside an ember. The most revealing sound is a thin, high whine or chitter, layered under the unsettled chorus of canines; on calm nights that whine seems to bend and echo across ice. Temperature falls noticeably where it passes, a prickling cold that clings to faces and fingertips. Observers note an uncanny stillness following the noise, as if the world holds its breath.

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden, localized drop in temperature paired with a high, reedy whine and the fur of nearby animals bristling without an obvious cause.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Avoid travel alone after dusk; keep groups tight and maintain a steady fire or lamp. Keep dogs leashed and near the light. Do not chase or corner whatever moved the sound — movement and heat discourage prolonged interest.
- defense: Create noise and sustained light: banging ulu blades on metal, blowing a lamp, or calling out as a group can break its attention. If available, seek the aid of a knowledgeable elder or shamanic practitioner: traditional chants and the tending of a lamp have been recorded as methods to drive the presence away. Protect animals first; remove trembling dogs to warm shelter immediately.
- offering: If forced into ceremony or appeasement, small tokens of warmth—smoke from the oil lamp or the careful sharing of a portion of dried fish—are suggested in tales, though such measures are makeshift and not guaranteed to pacify a truly aggressive sighting.
Abilities
- Convulsive BreathExhales a cold, invisible vapor that induces violent convulsions, fever, and disorientation in any creature that inhales it.
- Dog-Frenzy AuraRadiates an influence that drives nearby dogs into blind rage or crippling panic, breaking packs and undermining hunters.
- Baldman's ShiverIts furless body emanates an unnerving chill that saps stamina and accelerates hypothermia in exposed humans.
Weaknesses
- Shamanic BindingCan be driven off, bound, or expelled by Inuit shamans using drums, seal-bone talismans, and specific chants.
- Sustained Fire and SmokeProlonged exposure to open flame and smoke disrupts its breath and forces it to retreat from affected areas.
