Read Breakdown

Lore

Redcap is a small, squat Fae of ruined towers and lonely fordings, compact like a creature carved to fit stone crevices. In the field it announces itself with a metallic, old-iron tang in the air — not sweet, but the dry, mineral smell of rust and cold rain on iron. Sound is the clearest clue: quick, hollow footfalls on flagstone, the sharp tick of knitting-needles or a rasping chuckle that bounces off walls, and sometimes a low, practiced cough as if clearing moss from a throat. Temperature drops sharply near its favoured haunt; the air goes thin and bone-cold, as though the stone itself has been pulled into shade. A naturalist's record: sightings cluster at dusk around broken battlements and overgrown stairwells, where the creature keeps to shadow and narrow ledge.

Field Notes

Observations
  • Tiny iron-shod prints leading to a parapet and a damp, rust-red cap left draped on a stone are the most reliable sign of a Redcap's presence.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Avoid isolated ruins at dusk and do not touch or disturb small caps or garments found on battlements. Travel in daylight, keep to the main paths, and mark your route so you do not circle back into a lair. Do not respond to beckoning noises coming from windows or stairwells.
  • defense: Carry iron (nails, a small horseshoe or an iron token) as a deterrent and keep to open, well-lit ground; loud continuous noise and retreat to higher, exposed positions usually break the Redcap's focus. If confronted, create distance and withdraw—these creatures favour cramped, ambush-friendly spaces and rarely pursue over open terrain.

Abilities

  • Blood-Dyeing Cap
Its iron cap must be freshly stained with the blood of victims; while blood-dark the cap channels vitality and ferocity into the Redcap.
  • Murderer's Pike
Wields a heavy iron pike that rends flesh and clothing, and each strike aids in replenishing the cap's required blood-stain.
  • Blood-Sense of Ruins
Detects fresh blood across ruined keeps and battlefields, allowing it to track wounded or lone travelers even in utter darkness.

Weaknesses

  • Cap Removal
If its blood-stained cap is taken away or cleaned the Redcap loses its vitality and becomes inert or diminished.
  • Holy Symbols & Prayer
Display of a cross or the audible recitation of Christian prayers repels or binds it, forcing retreat from its haunt.
  • Sunlight
Direct daylight weakens and slows the Redcap, reducing its speed and aggressive drive.
