Lore

Rokurokubi is a Fae (yokai) that appears human by day but, under nightlight, reveals a neck that lengthens into a sinuous, controllable column. Field notes: movement is deliberate and oddly elastic — the head travels with the assurance of a creature accustomed to tight spaces. Smell: a faint trail of camphor and tatami straw mixed with the cool ozone of night air. Sound: the soft rasp of sliding paper, a whisper like silk over wood, and occasional low, nervous laughter. Temperature: the torso remains warm and human, while the extended neck carries a dry, cool feel, like stepping out into a moonlit courtyard.

Field Notes

Observations
  • An independent shadow on the ceiling or a head appearing at an unexpected angle above shōji (sliding screens).
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Prefers minor, uncanny pranks: peering at sleepers from rafters, borrowing small domestic items and returning them oddly arranged, imitating a household member's voice to startle the living, and leaving a single silk thread where it passed.
  • interaction: Do not shout or glare; sudden threats provoke alarm rather than submission. Speak softly and refuse to be baited into frantic pursuit. Offer a small, respectful token (rice, a cup of night tea, or a hairpin placed on a low table) and retreat to a calm corner; many Rokurokubi will inspect offerings, cause a mild disturbance, then withdraw before dawn.
  • offering: A small bowl of plain rice or a cup of unscented night tea placed where a visitor might pass.

Abilities

  • Endless Neck (Nocturnal Elongation)
By night the Rokurokubi's neck can silently stretch to snake through rooms and around corners, letting its head peer through windows, spy on sleepers, or reach victims from afar.
  • Whisper Theft
The Rokurokubi can whisper into a sleeping person's ear to steal dreams, learn secrets, or lull them into feverish sleep without revealing itself.
  • Sweat Lapping
Some Rokurokubi lick the perspiration or breath of sleepers to drain vitality or cause chills, a subtle predation rather than overt violence.

Weaknesses

  • Ofuda Exorcism by an onmyōji
A trained onmyōji can drive off or bind a Rokurokubi using ofuda talismans and ritual rites.
  • Dawn Light
Exposure to direct morning sunlight forces the neck to retract and halts its nocturnal transformations.
  • Sacred Rope (shimenawa) Binding
A properly placed shimenawa or similar sacred binding around a sleeping space can prevent the neck from passing through thresholds.
