Salamander

Lore

Salamander is a compact, lizardlike elemental recorded in medieval natural histories and alchemical texts, encountered where flame meets wood. Smell — a sharp mineral tang of warmed resin and faint sulfur that lifts the back of the throat. Sound — a soft irregular crackle like settling coals and a quick, high hiss, as if breath skimming hot metal. Temperature — localized, intense heat: a pocket of warmth that makes nearby air shimmer and hair rise. Field notes describe skin that seems to glow from within rather than flicker like a spirit; muscular and alive, it moves with deliberate curiosity among embers rather than drifting like smoke.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A ring or trail of singed moss and tiny ember-scored tracks on soot, often accompanied by an unexplained, steady warmth.
Encounter Advice
  • behavior: Primarily solitary and crepuscular, salamanders are drawn to persistent heat sources (hearths, kiln fires, natural outcrops of warm stone). They investigate slowly, stealing small pieces of pitch, resin, or charred material, and will retreat into embers when threatened. Territorial around chosen hearths but not predatory toward people unless provoked or cornered.
  • interaction: Approach with respect and distance. Do not douse or suddenly chill the fire they occupy — abrupt cold provokes panicked, erratic responses. Observe from the cool side of the hearth; present a small, warm coal or piece of pitch on a stone to invite calm inspection. Keep hands gloved or behind a barrier and avoid sudden movements or bright light that might scatter embers.
  • offering: A warm ember, a small piece of dried resin, or a carefully warmed flake of pitch placed on stone; tokens should be given gently and from a safe distance.

Abilities

  • Emberborn Rebirth
Legend holds that a salamander can be reborn from living embers, emerging whole from the heart of a fire after seeming death.
  • Ash-Smother Secretion
Its oily, ash-laced secretions can smother flames and produce choking smoke that quenches hearths and disorients foes.
  • Heat-Leech Step
When it presses against objects the salamander draws away warmth, gradually chilling metal and quenching nearby fires.

Weaknesses

  • Cold Dousing
A sudden deluge of cold water or immersion in running spring water disrupts its ember-core and can slay it.
  • Salt Scour
Salt applied to its skin desiccates its oily membrane and hampers regeneration.
