Lore

Skinwalker is a Witch/Spirit and a dangerous shapechanger that moves between human guises and animal forms. In the field it announces itself not with grand spectacle but small, uncanny details: a sudden, bone-deep chill that creeps under clothing; the sour tang of damp earth mixed with an iron note, like disturbed metal; and sounds that unsettle — a wrong syllable imitating a human voice, nails scraping at a window, or an animal cry that begins normal and ends with a staccato, unnatural cadence. Its presence is furtive and deliberate, as if an alert predator were learning how to be something else.
Origin: Diné (Navajo) • American Southwest

Field Notes

Observations
  • An animal or person that moves with a stilted gait, mimics a familiar voice inaccurately, or leaves tracks that shift between human and paw prints.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not travel alone at night in remote areas. Avoid answering isolated calls that sound like friends or family. Keep to well-lit, populated routes and maintain group cohesion—skinwalkers exploit isolation and confusion.
  • defense: Prioritize escape and shelter: move toward light, noise, or other people. Use firm barriers (locked doors, occupied vehicles) and create disturbance (loud sound, firelight) to break focus. Do not attempt to bargain or mimic them. Seek guidance from local community elders or experienced guardians rather than improvising confrontations.
  • offering: None recommended—avoid attempts to placate. Respectful distance and contacting community protectors are the safest responses.

Abilities

  • Skin-Weave
Takes and don a stolen human or animal pelt to instantaneously assume that exact form, including mimicry of voice and mannerisms.
  • Voice-Thread Mimicry
Threads memories from a stolen hide to flawlessly imitate a specific person's voice and call victims into traps.
  • Nightbound Sprint
Shifts into a four-legged gait or animal form to traverse vast distances at supernatural speed before dawn.

Weaknesses

  • Corn-Pollen Blessing
Ceremonial corn pollen scattered by a sanctioned healer purportedly disrupts transformations and scorches exposed stolen pelts.
  • Exposed Stolen Pelt
If a taken skin is found, torn or publicly exposed, the Skinwalker cannot assume that identity until the pelt is mended and is significantly weakened.
  • Naming/Binding Ritual
A truth-binding performed by a recognized ceremonial practitioner that forces the witch to speak its true name is said to limit its power.
