Lore

Stonecoat is a Cryptid: a heavy, quadrupedal beast sheathed in overlapping plates of river-polished stone that look carved more than grown. It smells of wet rock, crushed moss and a faint mineral tang; it announces itself with a low, grinding rumble like stones shifting on a slope and a soft percussion of pebbles; the air around it registers a steady earthen warmth — the shell feels cool to the hand but a slow, muscular heat radiates from beneath. A field naturalist's note: when it moves the ground settles in measured waves and small plants along its path are pressed flat as if paying respect.
Origin: Celtic (Scottish) • Highlands

Field Notes

Observations
  • A neat scatter of flat, scale-like stones arranged in a crescent pattern and flattened vegetation in a tight corridor leading to a talus slope.
Encounter Advice
  • behavior: Solitary and crepuscular, Stonecoats graze on lichen, root nodules and mineral-rich soil. They patrol narrow ledges and scree fields, pausing often to collect and refit stones into their armor. When threatened they do not chase; they tuck their limbs and become a motionless mound of stone, relying on camouflage and mass rather than pursuit.
  • interaction: Approach slowly and give clear space; avoid sudden noise or attempts to pry stones from its coat. If you must pass, skirt wide and leave a visible path — the creature respects deliberate routes. Communication is nonverbal: a careful placement of a smooth stone at its flank and a quiet bow of distance are often accepted signs of peaceful intent.
  • offering: A smooth river stone, a tuft of lichen, or a small pile of clean soil placed near its resting mound.

Abilities

  • Petrifying Mantle
Unfurls a living shell of sediment and lichen that creeps over flesh and fabric, hardening victims into rough-cut stone statues within heartbeats.
  • Seamwalk
Slides through mortar lines, cairns and bedrock as if they were doorways, emerging anywhere along the same stone work.
  • Echo-Stone Resonance
Sends tuned vibrations through nearby stone to mimic voices, footsteps or the collapse of a cairn to lure travellers off safe paths.

Weaknesses

  • Salt Drape
A thorough coating of coarse sea salt prevents the mantle from taking hold and causes bonded stone to flake free.
  • Sun-Noon Thaw
Direct noon sunlight weakens the living stone, causing seams to crack and the creature to slow and crumble over minutes.
  • Core Shard
Driving a blessed iron chisel into the geode-like heart hidden beneath its ribs shatters the animating core and collapses the form.
