Lore

Vetala is a revenant spirit said to inhabit the bodies of the dead, most often encountered around cremation grounds and lonely burial trees. In the field one learns to read its presence by subtle shifts: the temperature drops like a door closing on a winter room; the air carries a cold, metallic tang of iron and old ash mixed with damp earth; sound is a hollow, echoing sigh or the faint, misplaced murmur of a voice answering questions you did not speak aloud. It moves like a memory — patient, patient enough to wait years for a chance.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A corpse suspended or strangely arranged in a tree or on a pyre that appears unnaturally stiff and cold, with an unsettling stillness that makes nearby animals avoid the spot.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not visit cremation grounds alone at dusk or night. Avoid touching exposed remains or allowing a corpse to be moved; do not accept riddles or bargains from a disembodied voice. Keep to well-lit paths and travel in numbers until the area is clear.
  • defense: Light and heat are practical defenses: maintain a fire or lantern and keep moving to prevent being cornered. Traditional countermeasures include carrying iron or sacred ash, reciting protective mantras or hymns, and calling a qualified ritual specialist for binding or release rites. If confronted, do not engage the spirit's questions or taunts; break eye contact, place a barrier of iron or consecrated objects, and withdraw steadily.
  • offering: None reliably placates a vetala; leaving a small pile of burned offerings at a distance may distract lesser spirits, but the safest 'offering' is noninterference and respectful distance.

Abilities

  • Corpse Habitation
Inhabits and animates a dead body at will, speaking through it and granting the host unnatural strength and resilience.
  • Riddle of Binding
Poses paradoxical riddles that compel mortals into bargains or obedience until the question is answered, exploited as a test or trap.
  • Essence Withdrawal
Can withdraw its spirit from a corpse to become an incorporeal specter that slips between graves and resists physical capture.
  • Memory of the Dead
Reads and relays the memories and secrets of any corpse it occupies, revealing past crimes, names, and hidden knowledge.

Weaknesses

  • Vedic Exorcism
Sustained chanting of Vedic mantras or rites by a learned priest forces the vetala out of a host and pins it until rites conclude.
  • Funeral Fire
Open flame—particularly the sanctified flames of a funeral pyre—breaks its bond to a body and can drive it away.
  • Proper Last Rites
Correct performance of shraddha and attendant funeral rites severs its claim on a corpse and prevents re-possession.
